Healthcare and Summer Camp

Camp & Retreat Ministries

We are looking forward to having your child attend camp this summer. The health and well being of each camper is a priority of all of our Holston Conference Camps. The following descriptions detail our approach to campers and their healthcare.

What happens when a child gets sick prior to opening day?

Part of a great experience at summer camp is to make sure that each camper is healthy when they arrive. Below are some guidelines to follow before your camper arrives at camp this summer. These guidelines will help to not only insure that your child is healthy before he or she arrives at camp, it will also help to protect the larger camp community at each of our Holston Conference Camps. If your child is sick prior to attending camp please contact the camp he or she is attending and discuss program participation options. Every attempt will be made to schedule your child in another session when their health has returned.

Assessing the Health Status of Your Camper

Does your child have...?

1. Fever (100°F or greater)?  . . . .   o Yes      o No
2. Sore throat? . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .   o Yes      o No
3. Cough? . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .  o Yes      o No

If you checked "yes" for fever AND one or two of the other symptoms, keep your child at home because of an influenza-like illness.  Call our office to discuss program participation options. Current recommendation is that children remain home for seven days after symptoms start, even if the child is no longer ill.  If your child is still sick after seven days, keep your child at home until well for 24 hours.  If you have questions about your child's health or symptoms, call your child's healthcare provider.

If your child has been diagnosed by a healthcare provider with a different disease – such as strep – follow your healthcare provider's recommendation. Call our office to discuss program participation options.

What are the Health Check-In Procedures upon arrival at camp?

Your child’s Health Form is their “ticket” to their session of summer camp. It must be completed and signed by their parent/guardian. This form will be reviewed as part of the Health Check-In procedure. All medications brought from home for your child must be in their original containers. These will be collected for supervised administration according to the specific written instructions on their labels.

Your child’s temperature will be taken as part of the check-in process. If it is above 100, we will wait a few minutes and take it again. If it continues to remain elevated, we will discuss alternative program options. Camp is not a fun place to be when you’re sick and we have an obligation to the other campers.

What if my child gets sick during the week?

Your camper’s health is our priority. You will be notified if your child vomits, has a fever, has a persistent condition (i.e. headache, nosebleed), or needs to be taken to the doctor or emergency room.

Who is looking out for my child’s health concerns?

Every one of the camp staff have this in mind. Your camper’s counselor is trained in first aid and CPR and has been briefed on all the information provided concerning your child’s health. Each camp has a staff member who serves as the Healthcare Supervisor. This person is trained in all the procedures related to the proper handling and dispensing of all medications in the camp. A Registered Nurse visits the camp every day to check on the status of all health concerns. Staff members who lead adventure trips that are more than 30 minutes beyond an emergency medical facility have advanced training in wilderness first aid.
