Holston's missions coordinator is asking churches to assemble cleanup supplies, to help Holston Conference respond to a flood disaster in 17 counties of north Georgia.
"Flood buckets" are needed to replace Holston's stockpile of buckets, which will be sent to Georgia on Sept. 26 along with a disaster response team from the Chattanooga area.
Bill Daugherty hopes that Holston groups will consult this list of flood bucket items on the UMCOR site and make several buckets by Oct. 15.
"We try to keep some flood buckets in Holston at all times," said Daugherty, missions coordinator.
About 75 buckets, stored at Project Crossroads in Marion, Va., will be sent to Georgia. New flood buckets are needed to replace the 75, and also, to assist with the Georgia effort. The stockpile of buckets enables Holston to quickly respond to floods in its own boundaries as well as in other areas, Daugherty said. The buckets include items such as work gloves, sponges, scouring pads, and detergent.
The death toll in Georgia has risen to nine following floods on Sept. 21. Residents are grappling with damage that has left them homeless, uprooted their lives, and shut down bridges and major roadways.
The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) reported that it is in contact with the North Georgia Annual Conference to assist with recovery efforts.
